Product IDs and the suggested next ID
Every product needs a Unique Product ID. Platforms use it to tell your products apart, so it's how they know a product was updated rather than replaced by a new one.
What makes a good product ID
- Unique: no two products in a catalog can share an ID. Your SKU is usually a good choice.
- Permanent: keep the same ID for the life of the product. If you change it, the platform treats it as a brand-new product and loses its history, such as approvals and ad performance.
- Short and plain: letters, numbers, and dashes work everywhere.
Length limits
- Pinterest: up to 127 characters
- Facebook: up to 100 characters
- Google and Bing: up to 50 characters
On a combined plan, the form uses the shortest limit of the platforms in your plan, so one ID works everywhere.
The suggested next ID
Every Add Product form, and the Chrome extension, fills in a suggested ID for you, such as product12. It counts up across your whole account, so the suggestion is never an ID you've already used on any platform. You can change it to anything you like. If your own ID includes the suggestion (for example product12-blue), the next suggestion moves on to product13.
IDs for variants and multi-product forms
- Variants (Enhanced catalogs) get their own IDs built from yours, such as
tee01-red-small. Your ID becomes the group ID that ties them together. See Variants: colors and sizes. - Dashery adds the product type to your base ID, such as
art001-mug. - Store-synced products get IDs starting with
wc-(WooCommerce) orps-(PrestaShop).
"Already exists" when adding or importing
That ID is already in this catalog. Use a different ID for a new product, or find the existing one in Manage Product Catalog and edit it there. When importing, rows with an existing ID are skipped rather than overwriting your product.
